【今井ゼミ】Joint Program with Colorado University Students2025

みなさんこんにちは！今井ゼミ3年の又吉佑美です。5月15日にコロラド大学生とビジネスコンテストに参加しました。コンテストの内容は、SDGsの中からテーマを選び、日本およびアメリカ以外の国を市場と想定し、その社会課題に対する新たなビジネスアイデアを提案し発表するコンテストです。今回はそのビジネスコンテストについてレポートをお届けします。

Hello everyone! This is Yumi Matayoshi, a third-year student from the Imai Seminar. On May 15th, I participated in a business idea competition with students from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Leeds School of Business. We selected an SDG, identified a country outside Japan and the U.S., and proposed a new business idea to address a social issue. In this report, I’ll share my experience at the contest.

私のチームでは「＃12つくる責任、つかう責任」を達成するためのビジネスを考えました。

My team developed a business idea to help achieve Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

2月の中旬からコロラド生とzoomでミーティングをし、ビジネスを展開する市場と比較する企業を決めました。最初の顔合わせでは、お互いに緊張していてなかなか話が弾まず黙り込んでしまう場面がよくありました。私は自分の英語が思っている以上に相手に伝わらず、何度も心が折れそうになりましたが、どうしたら伝わるのか日本人チームと考えながら工夫してコミュニケーションをとっていました。例えば、声で伝わらない時はチャット機能を使って意思を伝えたり、パワーポイントを作成して内容を理解してもらいました。

Starting in mid-February 2025, we began holding Zoom meetings with the Colorado students to select a target market and a company for comparison. During our first meeting, everyone was nervous, and it was difficult to maintain the conversation. Sometimes, it became very quiet. I was disappointed because I felt that my English was not as effective as I wanted to be. However, I collaborated with my Japanese teammates to find better communication strategies. For example, when it was difficult to speak, we used the chat box to share our ideas or created PowerPoint slides to better explain our thoughts.

私たち日本側の意見と、コロラド側の意見が交差してしまうことや、理解しきれていないことも多かったので何度も何度もミーティングをして私たちのビジネスアイディアを固めていきました。

Our ideas from the Japanese side and the ideas from the Colorado side often didn’t match, and sometimes we didn’t fully understand each other. So, we had many meetings to discuss and adjust our thoughts. Gradually, we shaped and improved our business idea together.

初めて対面したのは本番から3日前の日でした。私たちのチームは資料の作成がほとんど完成していたので財務分析と質疑応答の内容を考えました。コロラド生は私たちよりも年下なのに財務についてとても詳しく、何度も助けてもらいました。内容においては持続可能な経済循環を意識し企業と顧客双方にとって利益のある関係性を築く仕組みを提案し、共同で資料を作成しました。この作成の時間が今までで一番苦労した点です、、、、ミーティングの最後には当日までに詰める内容を各自振り分けて、まとめることにしました。

We met in person for the first time on May 12, three days before the contest. Since our team had almost finished creating the presentation materials, we focused on financial analysis and preparing for the Q&A session. Although the Colorado students were younger, they were very knowledgeable about finance and helped us many times. We proposed a system that supports a sustainable economic cycle and builds mutually beneficial relationships between companies and customers. We collaborated on creating the presentation slides. This part was the most challenging for us. At the end of the meeting, we divided the remaining tasks among team members and decided to finalize everything before the contest day.

その日の放課後は大学の近くにある日本料理屋さんへ行き、一緒にディナーを食べました。その後は、渋谷を案内して、日本文化であるカラオケを体験してもらいました。コロラド生はカラオケを気に入ってくれたようで時間を延長して楽しみました！

After school that day, we went to a Japanese restaurant near the university for dinner. Then, we showed the Colorado students around Shibuya and took them to experience karaoke, which is a big part of Japanese culture. They really seemed to enjoy it and ended up staying longer to keep singing and having fun!

コンテスト当日、私たちは早く集まって内容を整理し、まとめました。大勢が集まる会場で英語でのプレゼンテーションをしたことがなかったのでとても緊張しました。私たちは本番の最後の最後まで内容を詰めました。全10チームあるので、どうしたら審査員に印象を残せるのか考え「独自性」を重視しました。また、模造紙も活用し、視覚的な工夫によってプレゼンテーションに特徴を持たせたり、チーム全員で市場国旗カラーをモチーフにした花を胸に付け一体感を持たせ、審査員の関心を集めることができました。

On the day of the contest, we gathered early to review and finalize our presentation. Since it was our first time presenting in English to a large audience, we were very nervous. We worked on the details until the very last moment. With 10 teams in total, we thought hard about how to stand out to the judges, so we focused on being unique. We also used a large poster to make our presentation more visually impactful. To show our team spirit and catch the judges’ attention, each team member wore a flower pin in the colors of our target country’s flag.

本番が終わるとコロラド生は「とても良い発表だった、最高の時間だった！」と声をかけてくれて、これまで努力をしてきたメンバー全員をたたえてくれました。この時、私たちはやり切った！！！という達成感に満ち溢れていました。

結果発表ではメンバー全員が強く祈って1位の発表を待っていました。すると、「1位はゴール12!!!」と聞こえたとたん、うれしさでチームメンバーに抱き着いてしまいました！

優勝することができてとても嬉しかったし、それ以上に素敵なメンバーと巡り合えて本当に良かったなと思いました。私はこのコンテストを通して、仲間と協働することとコミュニケーションの大切さを改めて実感しました。私はこのチームメンバーが大好きです！英語が苦手な私を最後まで支えてくれてありがとうございました！

After the contest, the Colorado students told us, “That was an amazing presentation! We had such a great time!” They praised each team member for all our hard work. At that moment, we were filled with a huge sense of accomplishment—we truly felt, “We did it!”

During the awards ceremony, we all waited nervously, hoping to hear our name called. When we heard “First place goes to Goal 12!!!,” we were so happy that we hugged each other with joy! Winning first place made us really happy, but more than that, I was truly grateful to have met such wonderful teammates. Through this contest, I was reminded again of the importance of teamwork and communication. I love this team so much! Thank you for supporting me, even though my English isn’t perfect. You helped me until the very end.
