Hello everyone, I’m Ai Ishikawa from the Department of English Language and Communication, and I’ll be in charge of today’s blog!

Today, we visited the Royal Danish Embassy in Japan and attended a lecture on Denmark’s energy policy and energy market given by Mr. Anton Bo Kjølby, Commercial Officer, Energy, at the Embassy.

Although the lecture was more challenging than I expected due to its many technical terms, it gave me a valuable opportunity to learn the latest renewable market trends from a Danish-Japan perspective. In this lecture, we learned about the background of Denmark’s renewable energy policy, the challenges of expanding renewable energy, and how the electricity market operates through power trading.

First, we learned why Denmark has invested heavily in renewable energy. After experiencing the oil crisis in the 1970s, Denmark realized the risks of relying heavily on imported fossil fuels. Since then, the country has actively promoted renewable energy, especially wind power, to improve both sustainability and energy security.

I was also surprised to learn that increasing renewable energy brings new challenges. Because wind power depends on weather conditions, maintaining a stable electricity supply requires not only renewable energy generation but also improvements to the electricity grid and effective power trading. Before the lecture, I mainly associated renewable energy with environmental protection. However, I realized that it is also closely connected to infrastructure, economics, and national energy security. This broadened my perspective and made the lecture particularly memorable.

Since Showa students have finally completed the summer semester, we will continue working on the program for next week’s presentation, after a short break over the weekend.
